On Sunday I had the opportunity to visit the “Makers, Hackers and DIYers Unite at SXSW Create 2014” at the SXSW Interactive Festival. The Long Center hosted a diverse mix of innovative companies working on variety of products from drones to 3D Printers. Our portfolio company Inventables is a marketplace for the materials used in the “maker” revolution of 3D printers and laser cutters.
They released a software called “Easel” which is designed to lower the barriers for novices in the maker space to join the maker revolution. In the early stages of adoption the design software can be cumbersome, but with Easel children can create designs and build items on Inventables Shapeko2 CNC Mill. I was impressed by the simplicity of the hardware and software and excited to see the enthusiasm the children had for working with a new type of media.
